Witness for the Prosecution: will the jury be convinced of his innocence…will you?

Witness for the Prosecution is based on the famous short story by Agatha Christie. The courtroom drama and thriller has now been adapted by Emma Bevan, a published author and playwright, for its première performance at Titchfield Festival Theatre this May.

The year is 1954. The scene: a courtroom, where a man - Leonard Vole - is accused of murdering a widow in order to inherit her wealth. The court must now decide whether Vole is innocent or guilty – and the audience will be able to judge too, with virtually the entire play taking place in the legal chamber before the judge and jury.

Agatha Christie’s writing is celebrated for many reasons – including her legendary ability for adding twists throughout a story, keeping her readers intrigued and guessing right until the very end. Emma has written this special adaptation which remains true to the original; but she has also added her own dialogue and a number of additional twists. The play promises to be a real treat for both Christie fans and for those who enjoy seeing new versions of classic productions.

Emma says, “We know that audiences love a good courtroom drama. People enjoy being able to weigh up for themselves whether a person is innocent or guilty – often watching intently as a case is unravelled before them. We decided to keep this adaptation set in the period that Christie wrote it – the 1950s, reflecting the way in which people spoke, the style of clothes people wore – and the type of forensics that were available to investigators at that time. This really is a must-see for our patrons who love a good thriller and who wish to decide for themselves: is the defendant innocent or guilty?”

The play’s cast includes a good mix of experienced actors from the theatre and newer members too.

Witness for the Prosecution opens on Wednesday 8th May 2019 until Saturday 18th May at 7.30pm in the Oak Theatre, Titchfield Festival Theatre, St Margarets Lane, Titchfield PO14 4BG.
