From the village green to Everest base Camp...

Posted: 2nd May 2019

Village Hotel Club Portsmouth helps local firefighters get fit before they embark on the Everest Base Camp Challenge 2019.

Village Hotel Club Portsmouth has opened the doors of its state-of-the-art gym to all local fire fighters participating in the Everest Base Camp Challenge 2019, free of charge.

It has announced this initiative in support of the 14 fire fighters from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service who will be trekking to Everest Base Camp in Nepal this November. They will be raising money for The Fire Fighters Charity – a local charity that provides psychological support to fire fighters following traumatic life and death incidents.

The fire fighters will undertake the tough challenge over a period of 12 days and will hike to an altitude of 18,208ft – experiencing temperatures as low as -37°as they make their way to Everest Base Camp.

In order to support this challenge and prepare the fire fighters for the physical fitness that Everest requires, Village Hotel Portsmouth will offer the team free use of all of its fitness facilities – including the gym, classes and swimming pool.

Michael Horner, general manager, Village Hotel Club Portsmouth said: “Trekking to Everest is no mean feat, and requires huge physical strength. That’s why we wanted to do our bit and open our facilities to all of the participants as they prepare for the challenge.

“What our local fire fighters do for the community is admirable, so we are delighted to support them as they take on another challenge to further help those fire fighters that need support. What the team are doing is inspiring and we look forward to welcoming them into our gym as they continue their preparation.”

The activity is part of Village Hotel Group’s mission to give back to the local community, with a range of activities to be announced around the country this year under a programme called The Village Green.

The Village Green was launched by English cricket captain Joe Root in September, who joined 30 Yorkshire school children in a cricket workshop at the Village Hotel Club, Leeds South. At the event, the hotel and health club chain announced a commitment to spend more than 30,000 hours per year volunteering in the local community. Each hotel will encourage 10 employees per month to spend a day with any charitable or community project they wish. In addition, every hotel will dedicate one day per month to supporting local sporting groups or events and will also adopt a local charity for the year.

Craig Sadler, watch manager, Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service said: “It’s amazing to see Village Hotel Portsmouth rally behind us as we prepare for the challenge. The team are thrilled to use the Village Hotel Club Portsmouth gym facilities and will certainly be singing their praises in Nepal!”
