Just over a week to go until the walking event of the year

It’s just over a week to go until the first ever Chichester Walking Weekend, running from 6th to 8th September, 2019.

With over 21 different walks now taking place - including three new walks which were added to the schedule just this week - the event showcases the Chichester regions world-class walking offering. Organised by Visit Chichester and The Ramblers Association South West Sussex Group, the Walking Weekend includes walks for all ages and abilities, and most importantly, most walks are free!

New walks added this week:

Three new walks, operated by Chichester Tour Guides, have been added to the schedule just this week. A guided walk in the footsteps of travellers and pilgrims, taking place on the Friday morning (10.45am) follows the footsteps of pilgrims, travellers and tradesmen from the 13th Century onwards from St Mary’s Hospital, to the Shrine of St Richard and through to Chichester’s streets. £10 per person, including a donation to St Mary’s hospital and Chichester Cathedral.

For those looking for something less specialist, the Chichester Tour Guides Highlights Tour, taking place on the Friday evening (5.30pm) and Sunday lunchtime (11.30am) takes visitors and locals alike on an intriguing and surprising walk through the ages; from Roman Britain to award winning architecture of the 21st Century, via medieval streets and the Market Cross, Georgian residences, the Cathedral quadrant and much more besides. £6 per person.

Other highlights, including free walks:

The Ramblers Iping Common Walk (8.3 miles) takes walkers on a stunning walk through the picturesque Stedham Village and over the River Rother at Stedham Mill. Other places on the route include the hidden treasures of Lords Common, Woolbeding Common and Ash House. The walk takes place on the Friday (10am) and is free of cost. Dogs welcome.

Alternatively, join local guide Gerald Gresham Cooke for the perfect summer stroll on the Tillington River Rother Walk (3 miles). Enjoy a gentle circular walk down to the River Rother, which flows through some of the most stunning countryside in Hampshire and West Sussex, and return via Smugglers Lane - a wonderful Sussex sunken 'Green Lane'. The walk takes place on the Friday (10.30am) and is free of cost. Dogs welcome.

For those more taken with the coast, join Dr Bill Martin from the Manhood Wildlife and Heritage Group on the fascinating All Aboard Gentle Stroll (2 miles) around seaside haven of Selsey, exploring the town's fascination for railway carriage homes. Originating from various railway lines, these carriages arrived in the 1930s and helped to meet the ever-growing demand for accommodation during the summer. See how the ‘railway homes’ look today while taking in the views of the stunning coast. The walk takes place on the Saturday (2pm) and is free of cost.

Finally, join Mulberry Divers on the Marine Life Walk to learn about the amazing wildlife on our coast. Your guide will show where to look, give you information on the residents, including daily life, loves, struggles and warfare in miniature. The walk takes place on the Friday (11am) and is £3 per person.

With spaces filling fast and some walks now fully booked (not those above), register now to avoid disappointment. Booking in advance is essential.
