Seven cheques for seven charities thanks to Walk for Peace

Posted: 26th January 2022

Seven local charities received cheques worth £1,100 each thanks to the fundraising efforts of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Elders Association (AMEA) and East Hampshire District Council.

The two organisations joined forces to organise the latest Charity Walk for Peace in September.

The money raised was then presented to the participating charities through an online ceremony on Sunday 23 January.

The event made a return in 2021 after being called off in 2020 owing to the pandemic. It was smaller in scale, but still raised £7,700 overall.

Around 50 walkers completed the course from Penns Place, through Petersfield town centre and back, in September last year.

This year’s event is already being planned, with Hogmore Inclosure in Whitehill & Bordon being lined up as a new venue.

Cllr Julie Butler, EHDC Deputy Leader, said: “It was lovely to get the walk back on the road again after calling it off in 2020.

"Of course, the whole point is to raise money for local charities, so it was with great pleasure that we handed over the cheques to our beneficiaries – even if it was only a virtual ceremony.

“Fingers crossed we can get back to seeing each other in person again for the next presentation.”

Zakariyya Choudhry, Regional Head of the Charity Walk for Peace, said: “It was a great effort by the teams at EHDC and the AMEA to get the walk going again this year and we are delighted to be able to bring some benefit to the local community.

“The AMEA is committed to supporting the local area in any way it can and raising money through the Charity Walk for Peace continues to be a successful way to do that.”

The seven charities to receive funding from the event this year were:

Havant & East Hants MIND
Liss Crossover Centre
Swallows Trampoline Club – Disability section
Artscape
The Kingsley Organisation
Dementia Friendly
Attenborough Explorer Scout Group
